Such an announcement regarding Big Hit giving away merch for free created a frenzy on various social media sites. The post received everything, from birthday wishes to furious political commentary.

Big Hit, alongside with Snoop Dogg, had given a link to his new collection with the caption “FREE BIG HIT MERCH OUT NOW!! Only @ BIGHITNUPID.com #gotwhatyouneed #freebighit @snoopdogg”. It came along with a video featuring quite aggressive lyrics, typical of Big Hit’s raw and unfiltered style.
Now, as for the madness in the comments: all sorts of madness. Comments ranged from frivolous indulgences like someone mentioning that it was his birthday and tagging Snoop Dogg to only those doubting the frenzy over the merch. The harshest might have called Big Hit out for selling out by performing at an event hosted by a controversial character, nicknaming him a ‘MAGAT’ and an ‘Uncle Tom.’ Ouch.
Next came more spammy responses, with a good number of users repeating the same flirty German phrase (“Wem kann ich was zeigen?”) again and again, as if they were bots. Good ol’ Instagram antics.
In the middle of these distractions popped some genuine fans; one representing Swansea City Football Club while monstrously enthusing Big Hit joining the team. Unfortunately, the atmosphere of fun would be cracked by a user threatening with violence with the hashtag #NiggaIllBeatYoAss.
And then…finally, we had the novel comment. This was a sincere recounting of one’s aspirations for work, his days in rehab, and now moving into a new home, effectively turning the merch post into an impromptu therapy session. It was raw, unexpected-and strangely human among trolls and bots.

Clearly, the post hit a nerve: once again proving that merch drops by rappers draw responses from the internet from one extreme of love to outright hostility. Will free merch bring these people together, or will it just add more heat to the already chaotic online tumult? It’s TBD. One thing is certain, though: Big Hit knows how to make people talk-even if half of those people are just yelling into the void.
