Drew McIntyre has stopped mellowing. The Scottish Warrior has fired a shot across this year in WWE championship picture to the thundering hoofs: “I’m going to claim this crown whether Daddy Management likes it or not.” The recent social media post with the words, “Overlooked. Under appreciated. Ignored. No more.” in tandem with a scalding promo has shaken that very wrestling community.

There is no dilution of feelings from McIntyre in that scathing message: “I get the answers every single time. Every time I told Courtney right to his face, I want him to win. I need him to win. Then I’m going to beat him. That title belongs to me.” From the emotion in this passage, this is probably a little bit risque than your usual wrestling story; McIntyre appears quite genuine in his frustration at the way he’s been treated within the company if we consider this he might be the most consistent performer in WWE.
The post image has a photo of McIntyre from an en route-to-impact match, veins popping as he screamed an unheard retort at his adversary, holding much of the fury that made McIntyre a pandemic era fan favorite. This was the period during which McIntyre pretty much carried WWE through a bunch of empty arena shows, delivering classic wrestling when the company was star-deprived.

Reactions to McIntyre were mixed between supporters and detractors. One pro-McIntyre had an ardent outburst: “The man carried us during Covid and the empty arena and when WWE forgot that he reminded them with an embarrassingly, few times!!!” referring to McIntyre’s prior title reigns some felt were prematurely and unworthily cut short.
Others held less sympathy, one comment going, “You’re nothing but an overgrown man-child, whining every time you don’t get your way.” It has created a little controversy among wrestling fans about whether McIntyre’s frustration is genuine or if he’s just another disgruntled star.
The Cody Rhodes connection grew to be the major talking point, with many comments being made to suggest that McIntyre should now set his sights on the current champion (Rhodes). One standard reply said, “Take the title away from Cody Drew you deserve it,” and another stated, “Time to take what you deserve from that mid card Rhodes.” These comments are a testament to the growing animosity between McIntyre’s camp and the proud Rhodes support.
Others attacked the booking of WWE, one lamenting, “Putting everyone over in his feuds and lost a lot but still at the top. That’s why Drew is the best. Work should be rewarded but we know Hunter always disrespect you and prefer the politician like Cody or his son Seth…” Thus, becoming a rather general critique of how the Triple H regime has treated established stars as opposed to new acquisitions.
Note there was a plethora of comments referencing McIntyre’s affiliations with Logan Paul, one sharp critiquing, “You’re Logan Paul’s sidekick. Playing second fiddle to a f’ing YouTuber!” The comment goes to highlight the controversial mixing-in of mainstream celebrities with wrestling’s established hierarchy.
The timing of McIntyre’s explosive outburst was quite interesting. With storylines being manipulated constantly by WWE’s creative team and with SummerSlam fast approaching, this could very well be the signal for McIntyre’s highly anticipated return to main eventing. His last championship run was suddenly dropped in 2021, and with good reason, a great many in the crowd felt that he never had a run worthy of his talent.
Much of the gravity with McIntyre is at the heart of what makes this ordeal even more fascinating. He’s among the handful of stars that rose out of the pandemic struggle, only to never quite stick at the top as everyone had expected him to. Given his current best character work is that of a sullen angry veteran: it is this pursuit of the title that feels more real to me than your usual wrestling script.

Based on some of the responses alone, McIntyre still remains one of the most divisive figures in WWE; loved by some, and derided by others as a washed-up star. Whether this exclamation leads to gold or more animosity remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure: Drew McIntyre is not going quietly anymore.
