Chappell declared her supremacy at the cool “We’re your favorite artist’s favorite artist” line placed upon her appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in the latter half of the past year. Her furniture-breaking stage presence and loud yet theatrical performance style, and definitely along with her fiercely independent nature, simply couldn’t accept any tragedies of the kind-the appearance on The Tonight Show or her outfit. With such genuineness, there was only a handful of viewers who dared to blatantly compare her to Lady Gaga, spurring an all-out argument in the comments section.

Roan cleverly referred to drag queen Sasha Colby during the interview: “I hope Sasha Colby one day watches me.” Yet people more loudly cheered her audacious look: bold makeup, big styling with hair that would frighten any Frankenstein bride. A Twitter user exclaimed, “I don’t know who did the makeup or her hands, but I am obsessed.” Another was more direct: “Why’s she dressed for Halloween?”
The comparisons to Gaga were simply lying in wait for eruption: “She will NEVER be GaGa!” said one user, although videos soon poured in with responses defending Roan’s uniqueness. “Good thing she’s Chappell!” said one supporter, while another noted: “You know back in the day my generation said Gaga was trying to be Madonna. And look how they’re so different and can happily co-exist.”
The charm, though, was not welcome by every single person in attendance. Critics accused her of trying too hard for attention. “Idk who this is but wow you really want attention,” stated one. Others were very much against the chewing gum during the interview, calling it “very unhygienic,” even as some so-called medical student came back with, “Chewing gum stimulates saliva production, which helps neutralize acids… potentially preventing cavities…from which the etiquette police chose to ignore almost entirely.”
Then it turned rather serious. Somebody probed about Roan’s allies in the LGBT, and the question was quite quickly shot down by a number of fans who insisted that Roan is an open lesbian artist whose work often embraces queer identity. “Her mere presence is a political statement,” one fan stated.
The loud and proud support for Roan remained amid all the mess. One fan exclaimed, “I love my queen Chappell Roan.” Another said, “We love her.” One skeptic stated, “I’m just going to let the young folk have this one. Good music though!”

Whether you consider her a liberally refreshing new voice or an over-the-top provocateur, one thing for sure: Chappell Roan ain’t here to be ignored. Judging from the split reactions, it feels as if she is doing exactly what she set out to do, which is to stir up controversy. Win or lose, they’re talking about her; and for an oversaturated pop world, that is probably the biggest win. Additionally, BTS Jin stunned audiences with his performance on the same show, highlighting the competitive landscape of today’s music scene.
