If you were to pick an Aussie household at random and walk into their tool shed, chances are you will likely come across one specific household item.
It’s a popular tool used by many homeowners and gardeners alike, but if you were to visit Cate Blanchett’s house it would be nowhere in sight.
In fact, it’s something the Aussie star has been staunchly outspoken about, revealing she believes it’s the world’s “most moronic invention”.

The tool in question is a leaf blower, and on several occasions Blanchett has made it known the garden tool is her arch nemesis.
In a recent interview with People, the actress doubled down on her disdain for the household devices.
“They’re the most moronic invention,” she told the publication.
“They’re a symbol of all that is wrong with us as a species.”
The mention of leaf blowers in her interview with People sent her off on a tangent.

“You just got me going about leaf blowers,” she said before turning to her costar Michael Fassbender to ask, “They’re moronic. I mean, if you see someone with a lead blower, doesn’t your blood pressure go up?”
Fassbender joined Blanchett in her frustration for the tool as they discussed that it is pointless to blow the leaves from one spot to another only to later be blown back by the wind.
They both later agreed that we should “bring the rake back”.
If you’ve ever been woken on what should be a peaceful Sunday morning to the ear-grating cacophony or your early bird neighbour tending to their gardens with Blanchett’s least favourite human invention, you’d surely agree.
If not, that won’t stop the Oscar winner from advocating for the eradication of what she believes to be a pointless tool.

”Leaf blowers need to be eradicated from the face of the earth,” she told Subway Takes host Kareem Rahma in a recent interview.
“This is the thing it’s a metaphor for what’s wrong with us as a species — is we blow s–t from one side of our lawn to the other side and then the wind is gonna blow it back,” she later added.

To back up her stance, Blanchett also referred to a 2011 study that found the hydrocarbon emissions from half an hour of leaf blower use was equivalent to a long-distance drive in a Ford Raptor ute, which saw the tools become banned in Washington DC.
“[They found] that 30 minutes on a leaf blower, this is gonna make you really sick, has more pollution than driving a pickup from Texas to Alaska,” she said.
That’s almost the equivalent of driving from Sydney to Perth… and back.

Blanchett also noted leaf blowers are a surefire way to make your neigbours “hate you”, because “in the end, all you’re doing is blowing the leaves onto your neighbour’s lawn.”
The Black Bag star notably opened up about her beef with the backwards garden vacuum in a 2022 episode of Hot Ones.
“I don’t understand leaf blowers,” she told host Sean Evans.

“Blowing leaves from one place to another only for them to be blown back again and then you go, ‘Oh, I’m going to blow them again’. And the gardeners, I mean, their faces – they know that what they’re doing is stupid.”
Whether you agree with the Hollywood star or not, Blanchett clearly won’t be backing down on her opinion anytime soon.
It seems to be the leaf-covered hill she’ll die on.
