Carrie Underwood Stuns With Gospel Performance On American Idol

    -

Carrie Underwood just reminded everyone why she is summoning one of the mightiest voices in music today. The country singer sang ‘How Great Thou Art’ from her Grammy-winning gospel album, ‘My Savior,’ on American Idol, and… well, let’s just say jaws are still being collected off the floor.

The moment was tweeted by the American Idol account, captioned, “Her voice. The message. The glory,” and frankly? It undersells it. Though this was an Easter Sunday Special Performance to air, there was a cascade of reflections, one more biting than the last, flooding the media commentary realizing that it touched them.

Viewers could not stop praising it as a spiritual experience. Rosemary Muse tweeted, “Absolutely beautiful, brought tears to my eyes,” while Wanda Nelson called Carrie “a wonderful role model for young girls.” More praise kept coming, one calling it “an angelic performance that was stunning on every level.”

No, there was a lot more to the performance. All commendations had firsthand accounts of the glorious high notes (these could probably break glass). Yet, most people gave a shout-out to American Idol for putting such shows out into mainstream faith-based television. “Thanks for bringing Christianity into our homes with such beautiful heartfelt music,” Terri Lenard said, further indicating how blessings come from unexpected places. “The show felt like a real touch down the soul into the very tips of toes!” noted follower juju✝️❤🐾☕.

Not everyone was swept along in the spirit, of course. One out-and-out tweet from Robin King gave the performance “a disappointment”, provoking a flurry of responses praying for her “hateful heart.” Classic Twitter drama.

The same vibes were evidently ringing for the timing; many comments referred to how just well it sat for an Easter Sunday worship. GDL0124 tweeted, “What a way to close out Easter Sunday worship,” while Meredith Carnes expressed gratitude “for putting Jesus Christ front and center.” The emoji game was strong with all the replies, and hearts, prayer hands, and cross symbols filled the comments.

Carrie’s no stranger to gospel music, mind you-her 2021 Grammy-winning album, ‘My Savior,’ won Best Roots Gospel Album. But to take that energy over to the American Idol stage? Next level. “Best person to ever sing this song!” said one fan in what could easily be the best summary.

Along with the emotional context, that would place one in the front row to some of the most unforgettable performances ever to be conceived in American Idol history. And judging by the reaction, folks wouldn’t mind a bit if Carrie took the mic as a permanent worship leader every Sunday.

Don’t take him at his word-he’ll try convincing the court that nothing else mattered to anybody right after this performance. The internet has spoken: Carrie Underwood is still untouchable.
