We’re still recovering from season four of Bridgerton, however, Netflix has announced that season five is already underway with Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling confirmed as the leads.
Taking to social media, the streaming giant shared a stunning visual confirming that season five in currently in production. The short clip declares that “love begins again” and sees Francesca and Michaela, lovingly dubbed Franchaela by fans, brushing hands.
The season will follow Francesca (Hannah Dodd) as a young widow who is ready for a second chance at love two years after the death of her husband John. When his cousin Michaela (Masali Baduza) returns, Francesca must choose between her complicated feelings – will she “stick to her pragmatic intentions or pursue her inner passions?”.
Season five is inspired by Julia Quinn’s When He Was Wicked, with Michael in the book being gender swapped to Michaela. This will be the first time that a same-sex romance takes place as the central storyline in Bridgerton, much to the delight of the fans.
Speaking about the importance of portraying this, Hannah said: “[Those love stories] have traditionally been excluded from things like period dramas – and queer people did exist, have always existed, and will always exist. So they deserve a love story just like everybody else.”
While fans are excited for Franchaela to shine in the upcoming season, some shared their disappointment that Eloise Bridgerton is still waiting for her main character moment. However, Bridgerton loves to surprise in many ways so while Franchaela will be in the spotlight, we can’t wait to see what happens to the rest of our favourite regency family.
