Jones comes up with an explosive claim: NATO attempted to assassinate Russian President Vladimir Putin by sending 48 drones at his helicopter. Recently, Jones posted on social media, indicating that the attack was purposely designed to escalate the war, no matter what the outcome would be, “NATO and the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky knew exactly what they were doing.”

Jones begins by saying that Trump was trying to keep the United States out of a nuclear war and I respect that. Soon after, his narrative took the route of more dramatic events, and he alleged that the assassination attempts had been designed to escalate the war regardless of success or failure.
The claim arises as the tensions are running high with Russia, while those coordinating NATO countries are in support of Ukraine. While Jones has offered no proof for his claims of a drone attack, his comments have incited heated debates between supporters and critics alike.
Much opposition met Jones’s assertions. One observed that Putin was apparently in Kursk, Russia, and not in Ukrainian territory. Another went on to say that if Putin had been killed, the probable successor to him, Dmitry Medvedev, would be “10 times worse than Putin.” Then followed a few more who said killing Putin might be worse than helping him.
The ones in support of Jones accused NATO and Western powers of today’s escalation. One wrote, “Russia has no choice but to level Kiev,” while another fingered “the deep state” for “slowly swallowing” Trump as the “last hope of resistance.” Some users joined in calling for Trump to pull the U.S. out of NATO for these provocations.

A bizarre turn was taken when a user compared the whole mess to a video game: “Trump, Give Vassal Directive: Stop Vassal War. Zelensky: Refuses. Trump: Loses 150 Prestige.” The weird analogy served as a way to both mock the serious geopolitical tensions and convey frustration toward Ukraine for refusing to negotiate.
While some commenters criticized Trump for the handling of the situation, one commenter lamented, “This is not the President Trump I used to know & proud of,” implying the former president is “losing it very fast.” Some attacks casted Trump as inconsistent regarding his Ukrainian policies, one of whom said that he just said the opposite weeks ago with regards to Russia’s intentions.
The argument swiftly morphed into other conspiracies, while one stated that the kingpin spawning global conflicts could very well be in London rather than Washington. This is all very typical of the Jones’ crowd attempting to assign geopolitical tensions to some shadowy global elite instead of nation-state confrontations.

The unsourced and unproven rant of Jones did more to abuse than clarify matters; passions have been raised on both sides, either for or against him, regarding much of the implications. The claim that there was a drone attack on Putin remains utterly unverified, and the violent reaction only serves to illustrate just how divided discussions surrounding Ukraine and Russia have become in certain online clusters. The argument continues, rashly, with no sign of closure, as the geopolitical tensions refuse to die down.
