Equity markets across the Asia-Pacific region were mostly lower in early trade on Monday, a trend that could weigh on domestic sentiment.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 slipped 0.1 per cent after data showed the country’s economy expanded less than expected in the fourth quarter, though it managed to avoid a technical recession. Japan’s GDP grew 0.2 per cent year-on-year during the October–December period, well below expectations of 1.6 per cent growth.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined 0.67 per cent, while Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 edged 0.27 per cent higher. Financial markets in South Korea and mainland China remained closed for a holiday.
On Friday, US markets ended mixed. The S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.05 per cent and 0.12 per cent, respectively, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.22 per cent. The indices saw limited movement after US consumer price index (CPI) data largely met market expectations.
