Benchmark equity indices, BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50, ended Wednesday’s choppy session in negative territory

Sensex Today: Equity indices, BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50, closed in the red on Wednesday after a volatile session. The BSE Sensex dropped by 312.53 points or 0.40% to finish at 78,271.28, trading within a range of 78,735.41-78,226.26.
Similarly, the NSE Nifty50 ended lower by 42.95 points or 0.18% at 23,696.30, with a day’s high of 23,807.30 and a low of 23,680.45.
Out of the 50 Nifty constituents, 25 stocks closed lower, led by Asian Paints, Titan, Nestle India, Britannia, and Tata Consumer, which saw losses of up to 3.40%. On the other hand, ONGC, Hindalco, Apollo Hospitals, and BPCL saw gains of up to 2.90%.
The broader markets outperformed the benchmarks, with the Nifty Smallcap100 index rising by 1.85%, while the Nifty Midcap100 index gained 0.68%.
Among sectoral indices, Nifty PSU Bank, Metal, OMCs, and Media indices saw gains of over 1%, while Nifty FMCG, Realty, Auto, and Consumer Durable indices declined by up to 1.75%.
Global Cues
Asia-Pacific markets advanced on Wednesday, following a positive lead from US equities. Wall Street managed to overcome concerns surrounding Trump’s tariffs and China’s retaliatory measures.
China resumed trading after the Lunar New Year holiday and is set to release its Caixin Services PMI for January later today, offering insights into the performance of its services sector.
The Nikkei rose by 0.12%, while the Topix climbed 0.27%. The Kospi surged 1.06%, and Australia’s ASX 200 added 0.75%.
In the US, all major indices ended higher, with the Nasdaq gaining 1.35%, the S&P 500 rising 0.72%, and the Dow Jones increasing by 0.30%. Investors are now awaiting upcoming PMI data and US trade figures.
