Govt Widens Gold Hallmarking Net—More Districts Covered Under BIS Rules

This step will make a larger part of India covered under the mandatory BIS gold hallmarking framework, ensuring the protection and safety against forged gold jewelleries to innocent customers.

What Is BIS Gold Hallmarking?
Hallmarking is the accurate determination and official recording of the proportionate content of precious metal in jewellery/artefacts or bullion/coins. In context of gold items, it is known as gold hallmarking.
In India, it is set by the Bureau of Indian Standards or in short, BIS.
Currently, the mandatory hallmarking order is applicable on 14, 18 and 22 carats of gold jewellery/artefacts only.
For hallmarking of jewellery, a jeweler who wants to sell hallmarked jewellery has to obtain a registration from BIS.
The registered jeweler submits the jewellery for hallmarking to BIS recognized Assaying & Hallmarking (A&H) centre. A&H centres are the testing centres where the jewellery is tested. After testing, the A&H centre applies hallmark on the jewellery which is found meeting the requirement of the standard.
When Was BIS Gold Hallmarking Launched First Time?
Indian government made it mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery/artefacts in 256 districts of the country with an order passed on 23 June 2021.
