HDFC Bank has informed customers that UPI-based cash withdrawals at ATMs will soon be counted as part of customers’ monthly free ATM transaction limit, after which standard charges will apply.

In a customer communication, the private sector lender said the revised rule will take effect from April 1, 2026. Under the change, UPI cash withdrawals conducted at ATMs will no longer be treated separately and will instead be included within the number of free transactions permitted each month.

“UPI cash withdrawals at ATMs will be included as part of your monthly free ATM transaction limit,” the bank said in the mailer.

The bank added that customers who exceed the free transaction threshold will be charged for subsequent withdrawals. “Once the free limit is exhausted, a fee of Rs. 23 + taxes per withdrawal will apply,” it stated.

Currently, for savings and salary accounts, five withdrawal transactions are free across HDFC Bank ATMs. For non-HDFC Bank ATMs, the free limit is three transactions for top-6 cities and five transactions in non-top-6 cities.

The lender described the move as part of its effort to standardise fee structures across channels. “This update is in line with our commitment to maintaining transparent and consistent transaction charges,” the communication said.

UPI-enabled ATM withdrawals allow customers to withdraw cash without using a debit card by scanning a QR code at supported machines and authorising the transaction via a UPI app. The facility has been gradually rolled out across banks as part of efforts to expand cardless cash access.
