India Post clarified that Registered Post is merged with Speed Post, enhancing delivery speed and retaining proof of delivery, aiming to optimize logistics and improve efficiency.

The integration aims to optimize logistics by combining the strengths of both services
The announcement of the discontinuation of Registered Post service by India Post has sparked a flurry of concerns among India citizens. Being a decade-old service with a history associated with India’s growth and development since its Independence, the Registered Post has been in the minds of Indians before the inception of Speed Post.
But did India Post really discontinue the Registered Post service?
No. In a clarification, India Post confirmed that Registered Post service has been merged with Speed Post.
Registered Post is a postal service that focuses on proof of delivery, while Speed Post, on the other hand, focuses on fast and time-bound delivery, where speed matters more than strict identity verification.
In a social media post, India Post stated, “Now, send Registered Post with the speed of Speed Post — no compromise on trust, just quicker outcomes.” The clarification came after confusion spread on social media over the fate of Registered Post, prompting the department to issue a fact check and reiterate that the service remains intact and has only been enhanced.
The integration aims to optimize logistics by combining the strengths of both services. Registered Post, known for its person-specific delivery and legal validity, will now operate under the Speed Post framework — ensuring faster delivery while retaining its trusted features. According to India Post, users will continue to receive delivery receipts, real-time tracking, and legal acknowledgments, just with improved speed and backend efficiency.
The revamped system maintains the accountability of both services. While Registered Post traditionally allowed delivery only to the addressee or their authorized representative, Speed Post was address-specific — delivered to anyone at the given address. Under the new structure, customers who opt for Speed Post with registration will receive person-specific delivery, preserving the unique benefit of Registered Post.
Fact Check: Registered Post is NOT being discontinued.India Post has upgraded the service by merging it with Speed Post. Here’s what that means for you. 👇— India Post (@IndiaPostOffice) August 7, 2025
Moreover, the upgraded service brings additional features including:
- End-to-end online tracking
- Real-time delivery updates
- OTP-based secure delivery
- Cash on Delivery (COD) option
- Credit facility for regular users
- Volume-based discounts
- National Account Facility for corporate clients
The Department of Posts believes this rationalization will reduce transit delays, enhance backend sorting, and improve overall service connectivity.
India Post urged users to share the update and help dispel misinformation, emphasizing, “We’re modernizing, not erasing.”
