Complete Circle CIO Gurmeet Chadha slammed Amazon’s recent layoff announcement, calling out the company’s use of corporate jargon.

The investor expressed his frustration after Amazon announced another 10,000 layoffs following 18,000 cuts in November. He questioned the use of titles like “People Experience Head” and “Chief People Officer” while referring to employees as “family,” calling it all a show.

“Amazon is laying off 10000 more people after laying off 18k in November. They call their HR heads as People Experience Head, Chief People Officer and fancy names… employees r called families. Sab drama!!” he said in a post on X.

Chadha condemned widespread layoffs disguised as innovation, and argued that technological advancements should not harm people’s livelihoods. He further said that AI and other disruptive technologies are pointless if they inflict suffering.

“AI or any disruption which brings misery to ur own people is useless,” he added.

Citing Guru Nanak Dev’s philosophy of ‘Sarbat da bhalla‘ (welfare of all), he emphasised the importance of prioritising people’s well-being in any innovation.

“Call me old school but I value people more than anything else. Any innovation, as Guru Nanak Devji said, should keep people welfare (Sarbat da bhalla) as the core,” he said.

Chadha’s remarks came after Amazon CEO Andy Jassy’s aggressive restructuring efforts to flatten the company’s hierarchy and empowering employees.

Citing concerns about sluggish decision-making due to excessive managerial layers, Jassy aims to streamline operations and foster a more agile work environment.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Jassy criticised the current structure, stating, “You add a lot of people and you end up with a lot of middle managers.”

He argued that this excess of middle management often leads to unnecessary bureaucracy and slows down progress.

“You end up with these people being in the pre-meeting, for the pre-meeting, for the decision meeting, and not always making recommendations and owning things,” Jassy elaborated.
