On December 30, 2024, Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister MK Stalin inaugurated India’s first glass bridge in Kanyakumari. The 77-meter-long and 10-meter-wide glass bridge connects the Vivekananda Memorial with the Thiruvalluvar statue. A first-of-its-kind in India, the glass bridge offers a unique experience of walking above the ocean and soaking in the beauty of the city.

Located on the southern tip of India, the glass bridge has become yet another reason to visit the beautiful and culturally rich Kanyakumari. In case you are planning to visit the city for your New Year’s trip, then here are five things that you must do in Kanyakumari.

    Visit the Vivekananda Rock Memorial

Situated on a rock island in the middle of the sea, the iconic monument is accessible by a short boat ride. It honours Swami Vivekananda, who meditated on this rock in 1892 and gained spiritual enlightenment. The memorial features a statue of Vivekananda, an auditorium, and a meditation hall, all with panoramic views of the ocean.

Witness the sunrise and sunset at Kanyakumari Beach

Kanyakumari is situated at the confluence of the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, and the Bay of Bengal. The sight of the sun rising from the ocean in the early morning or setting over the horizon in the evening is an unforgettable experience. The combination of the three seas and the dramatic landscape offers a unique backdrop.

    Explore the Thanumalayan Temple

This ancient Hindu temple, located in the town of Suchindram near Kanyakumari, is a unique blend of three deities—Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma—representing the supreme trinity of Hinduism. The temple’s architecture is grand, with intricate carvings, massive pillars, and a beautiful sanctum.

Trek to the Cape Comorin Lighthouse

The Cape Comorin Lighthouse, situated near the southern tip of India, offers an adventurous experience and stunning views of the surrounding coastline. The lighthouse is one of the oldest in India.

    Explore the Kanyakumari Archaeological Museum

If you are a history and culture nerd, do visit the Kanyakumari Archaeological Museum. The museum showcases a variety of ancient artifacts, sculptures, and relics dating back to the Sangam period and other historical eras. It offers a unique insight into the evolution of Kanyakumari and its connection to Tamil, Hindu, and coastal maritime history.
