    Game report

    Brewers 6, Mariners 3

Kyle Harrison, meet the opening day roster?

Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy has not quite yet gone as far as to say as much, but after another dynamite outing from the left-hander March 8 against the Seattle Mariners it would seem Harrison is trending toward a spot on the team charter back to Milwaukee.

The 24-year-old carved up the Mariners over three-plus innings, striking out eight and allowing only one earned run on two hits.

Save for one first-pitch fastball he grooved to Leo Rivas for a home run in the second, Harrison was downright filthy as he struck out eight over three innings. Harrison had a four-strikeout inning in the second, with a passed ball third strike allowing a runner to reach base.

The lefty’s secondary stuff was particularly obscene. On five swings against his slurve, Harrison induced four swings and misses, and on the new kick changeup he generated three whiffs on four swings.

Those pitches form the critical next step in Harrison’s development. As a top prospect coming through the San Francisco Giants system, Harrison buttered the bread with his rising, riding four-seam fastball, but part of his difficulty in finding his big-league footing has been struggles with secondaries.

Do the Brewers view Harrison as ready for a big-league role? Murphy didn’t even let the question finish before answering.

    “Yes.”

    Jacob Misiorowski looks sharp

Murphy didn’t seem too pleased with Misiorowski’s first outing of spring in which he battled his command at times against Great Britain.

This showing was much more positive.

Misiorowski struck out six over 3 ⅓ innings, walking only the first batter he faced. He, like Harrison, surrendered a solo homer but otherwise mowed down the Mariners with ease.

The Brewers wanted to give Misiorowski a bit of a challenge by having him come in during the middle of the game after Harrison.

“Tough situation for him coming in relief in a spring training game,” Murphy said. “It’s tough. I thought he responded well. He got four ups. That’s what you’re looking for here.”

Jared Koenig has a better outing

The velocity was up in a quick outing for reliever Jared Koenig. Entering after Harrison walked the first batter in the fourth, Koenig needed only six pitches to get three outs. He topped out at 95.6 mph on his sinker while inducing a double play and strikeout.

That’s an encouraging sign for the left-hander whose velocity was down in his first few spring outings.

    Garrett Mitchell’s day

Both sides of the enigmatic Garrett Mitchell profile were on display as he went 0 for 4.

Three of those at-bats were strikeouts, which has always been the part of Mitchell’s game that needs refinement considering his career 33.9% strikeout rate.

But in his first at-bat, Mitchell smacked a line drive at 111.6 mph right at a defender, marking his fourth batted ball of spring at 104.6 mph or faster. He only has four batted balls this spring.

    Prospect watch

Ethan Murray launched the highlight of the afternoon, sending a three-run homer a Statcast-measured 477 feet. “I don’t have any that have gone that far,” he said afterward.
