1. The Socialist Party of America organised the first National Women’s Day in the United States on February 28, 1909.
2. Clara Zetkin, a German feminist, proposed an International Women’s Day during the International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen in 1910.
3. The date was chosen to commemorate a 1917 walkout by Russian women seeking “bread and peace” during World War I, which helped spark the Russian Revolution.
4. The Russian women’s demonstration was in response to severe food shortages, World War I, and a campaign for gender equality.
5. The United Nations formally began honouring IWD on March 8, 1975.
6. International Women’s Day is a public holiday in numerous countries, including Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Cuba, and Vietnam.
