Should the Boston Celtics retire Al Horford’s jersey number? The Celtics famously have a host of such jerseys out of commission for all time, and given the storied history of the ball club, that ought to come as no surprise. But that tendency is no reason to hesitate on honoring the 2024 champion big man in Boston, given there are enough jersey numbers left over to field multiple NBA rosters.
So rather than wring hands over jersey number availability, the real question is whether Horford has done enough with Boston to deserve it – and whether his decisions to leave the team not once, but twice in free agency ought to impact that outcome as well.
