    Susan Sarandon details Hollywood ‘blacklisting’

    -

Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon has claimed she was “blacklisted” from Hollywood after speaking out against the war in Gaza.

Making an appearance at the 40th Goya Awards in Barcelona, the Thelma and Louise star detailed the alleged shunning that altered the course of her career.

Sarandon, whose long history of activism spans the duration of her 55-years in acting, revealed that she’d been axed by her reps at United Talent Agency after speaking at a pro-Palestine rally in 2023.

“I was fired by my agency, specifically for marching and speaking out about Gaza, for asking for a ceasefire,” Sarandon claimed.

She said that as a result of being dropped, it became “impossible” to land so much as a small television role – let alone the cult-classic, critically acclaimed film roles that fans have come to know her for.

“I don’t know lately if it’s changed. I couldn’t do any major film or anything connected with Hollywood,” the Rocky Horror Picture Show star said.

Thereafter, Sarandon was forced to pursue work on foreign shores, eventually finding new agents in England and Italy.

“I just did a film in Italy, and I did a play at the Old Vic for a number of months.”

She then revealed that an Italian director she’d recently worked with had initially been advised not to hire her.

“He didn’t listen, but they had that conversation. Right now, I kind of specialise in tiny films with directors who have never directed, in independent films.”

Owing to her activism, she’d been unable find work with any major American studio – even going as far as labelling the US as a place of “repression and censorship”.

But she says that her new life in Europe has afforded her the freedom to express her thoughts on the war as she sees fit.

Sarandon is well known for her social and political activism, having been appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 1999.

Her comments come after a source told Variety that Paramount studio execs keep a list of celebrities black-listed for speaking out against Israel’s actions in Gaza.

According to the report, the studio responsible for movies like Top Gun has a “list of talent it will not work with”.
