The mineral water brand Topo Chico will be “temporarily unavailable” in the United States, and the shortage may last months.
Topo Chico, which is owned by Coca-Cola, revealed in a statement that both the production facility and the water source located in Mexico will be undergoing upgrades, leaving the bottled water more difficult to obtain in the meantime.
According to a letter Coca-Cola sent distributors, which was seen by CNN, it recently “identified additional challenges in the source wells, including quality issues related to the source’s geology,” resulting in a pause in receiving any orders.
“We are now making further investments at the source to improve source stability and quality and enable increased production, requiring us to temporarily stop production,” the letter read.
A spokesperson for the company told CNN that they are planning for the mineral water to be back on shelves around July.
Since the company’s inception in 1895, Topo Chico mineral water has been sourced from wells in Monterrey, Mexico, where the bottles were first sold in the 1920s, according to Chron.com.
The company clarified in a statement to the website that while the upgrades will affect the brand’s mineral water, all other beverages produced by Topo Chico, such as its sparkling water and canned cocktails, will “remain available in the United States.”
This is not the first time there has been a Topo Chico shortage in the U.S., as there was previously one in 2022 due to high consumer demand and a shortage of raw materials.
Last year, the brand’s mineral water was also recalled due to the possible presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacteria that occurs naturally in water sources, including mineral water.
According to a letter sent to Costco customers in June 2025, the health risks of consuming mineral water with Pseudomonas are “very low” in healthy individuals and will only cause “minor health consequences” in people with “weakened immune systems.”
The recall specifically applied to bottles that were sold at select Costco warehouses in Texas and Louisiana from May 20 to May 29, 2025.
The water bottles were sold in 18-packs and have the lot number 13A2541 printed on both the case’s packaging and the neck of the individual bottles.
Customers who have purchased the affected water bottles are urged to return them to their local Costco in exchange for a full refund. Any questions regarding the recall can be directed to Coca-Cola using the phone number 1-800-GET-COKE.
