Jim Knowles discusses Tennessee ‘starting from a clean slate’

    -

Tennessee will kick off spring football practices March 16. The Vols’ annual Orange & White Game will conclude spring practices April 11 at Neyland Stadium.

Jim Knowles enters his first spring with Tennessee as defensive coordinator. He served in the same capacity at Penn State in 2025 and Ohio State from 2022-24.

Knowles met with media ahead of spring practices and discussed his methodology behind teaching his defensive scheme at a new program.

“I’ve done it differently at different places, but here, we are starting from a clean slate,” Knowles said. “That doesn’t mean that we don’t use some things that they’ve used here in the past.

“I try to listen to, maybe a certain way that (the previous staff) called a certain thing, and I can change on that if (the players) are already familiar with a certain term. In general, I’d say we’re starting from a clean slate.”
