Lakshadweep has always been stunning. The problem was getting there. With the launch of the daily Kochi–Agatti flight, that barrier just got smaller

Lakshadweep Travel Guide: New Flight, Permits, Best Time And Places To Visit
India’s most secluded island has just become more accessible. Regional carrier FLY91 has launched a daily Kochi–Agatti flight, strengthening connectivity between mainland India and the remote Lakshadweep archipelago. The new route joins its existing Goa–Agatti service and signals a broader push to open up access to the islands, not just for tourists, but also for residents and regional travel.
For travellers who have long dreamt of visiting Lakshadweep’s glass-clear lagoons and coral atolls, this new flight could be the easiest gateway yet.
Places To Visit In Lakshadweep
Agatti – Entry point and one of the prettiest lagoons
Bangaram – Private-island vibes and bioluminescent waters
Kavaratti – Capital island with mosques and marine life
Kadmat – Long beaches ideal for water sports
Minicoy – Unique culture, lighthouse views, Maldivian influence
How To Reach Lakshadweep: Flights And Ships
Lakshadweep is connected to the mainland by air and sea, and both have their own charm.
By Air:
The only airport in the islands is in Agatti. The flight is short but scenic. You’ll spot the bright blue lagoons well before landing. From Agatti, you may need a speedboat transfer to reach resort islands like Bangaram, depending on your itinerary. After PM Modi’s visit more airports across India offer flights to Lakshadweep:
Kochi to Lakshadweep: Considered the gateway to the island, most travellers head to Lakshadweep from Kochi.
Goa to Lakshadweep: FLY91 had launched a flight from Goa to Agatti.
Delhi/Mumbai to Lakshadweep: Both cities have flights to Agatti but with a layover (most often in Kochi).
By Sea:
If you prefer the slow, old-school route, passenger ships operate from Kochi to islands like Kavaratti, Kalpeni and Kadmat. The journey takes anywhere from 14 to 20 hours, depending on the island.
Kochi to Lakshadweep: If you are planning to sail to Lakshadweep from Kochi, there are seven passenger ships – MV Kavaratti, MV Minicoy, MV Amindivi, MV Corals, MV Lagoon, MV Lakshadweep Sea, and MV Arabian Sea. The journey takes about 14-18 hours.
Mumbai to Lakshadweep: Cordelia Cruise operates the Empress, a cruise ship that takes travelers to Lakshadweep from the international cruise terminal in the Fort area.
Mangaluru to Lakshadweep: The newly launched ‘Parali’ ship takes travellers to the Mangaluru old port from Lakshadweep and takes 7 hours.
Lakshadweep is not an open-access destination. Every visitor, including Indian citizens, must obtain an entry permit.
You can apply through:
- Lakshadweep Tourism portal
- Registered tour operators
- Lakshadweep Administrative Office in Kochi
Documents required:
- Passport-size photo
- Valid ID
- Travel tickets
- Hotel or resort confirmation
Your permit specifies which islands you can visit, and you must stick strictly to that list.
The Best Time To Visit Lakshadweep
The best time to visit Lakshadweep is from October to early May. During the winter months, from December to February, the weather remains mild, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 32°C, which makes it perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving.
