Nowadays, people are far more aware of family planning than before. Until now, methods such as condoms, birth control pills, injections, or IUDs (intrauterine devices) have been commonly used. However, many women experience side effects from pills or discomfort from IUDs, making these options difficult to continue long-term.

What if contraception could be managed with just a small stick placed under the skin? Medical science has made this possible. A tiny implant inserted into the arm can prevent pregnancy for up to three years. This modern method has now been introduced in parts of India, including Maharashtra.

What Is This New Contraceptive Method? Medically, this method is known as a ‘subdermal implant’. It is very small, about the size of a matchstick. Unlike pills or devices placed in the uterus, this implant is inserted just under the skin near the elbow.

How Does the Implant Work? Once placed under the skin, the implant slowly releases a hormone called progestin into the body. This hormone works in two main ways. Firstly, it prevents the formation of eggs. Secondly, it stops sperm from reaching the egg. After insertion, no additional birth control method is needed for three years.

Can Fertility Return After Removal? Yes. If a woman wishes to conceive, the implant can be removed by a doctor at any time. Natural fertility usually returns within a few days after removal. Unlike IUDs, there is no cut in the genital area, no placement in the uterus, and a much lower risk of infection or discomfort.

Where Is This Facility Available in Maharashtra? The service has been introduced under the National Health Mission. At present, it is available at six secondary and tertiary healthcare facilities in Maharashtra, including district hospitals and medical colleges. In the future, the programme is expected to expand further through government healthcare centres in major cities such as Mumbai and Pune.

How Is the Implant Inserted? The implant is inserted through a minor surgical procedure that takes only a few minutes. It should always be done under the guidance of a qualified doctor.

The subdermal implant is being seen as a revolutionary step in family planning. It offers women a safe, long-term, and hassle-free contraceptive option.
