Jaggery is a widely used sweetener in Indian kitchens, and many people with diabetes prefer it as an alternative to refined sugar. However, adulterated and chemically treated jaggery is increasingly being sold in the market these days. Consuming fake jaggery can be harmful to health, which makes it essential to check its quality before buying it. Here are a few simple ways to identify pure and adulterated jaggery at home.

Pure jaggery has a natural sweetness and a pleasant aroma derived from sugarcane. In contrast, adulterated jaggery may have an unusual smell or no aroma at all, as it is often mixed with chemicals or extra sugar. If the jaggery smells odd or artificial, it is best to avoid it.

One easy test is the water test. Take a cup of warm water and drop a small piece of jaggery into it. Pure jaggery dissolves slowly, and the water remains clear. If the jaggery is adulterated, the water will change colour quickly due to the presence of added substances.

Colour is another important indicator. Genuine jaggery is usually light brown. Adulterated jaggery often appears yellow or very dark brown. To make fake jaggery look more appealing, manufacturers may use chemicals, so it is advisable to avoid jaggery that looks overly shiny or polished.

Taste also reveals a lot. Real jaggery has a mild, natural sweetness, while fake jaggery tastes excessively strong and artificial. In some cases, consuming adulterated jaggery may leave a bitter aftertaste or cause a strange sensation in the throat. If you notice any unusual feeling in your mouth or throat after eating jaggery, it could be impure.

You can also check the texture by rubbing a small piece of jaggery between your fingers or on your palm. Pure jaggery is soft and crumbles easily. Adulterated jaggery tends to be very hard and sticky. If it sticks unnaturally to your hand or feels plastic-like, it is not safe for consumption.
