Ariana Grande hosted SNL for the third time and her fashion choices were exemplary – a vintage Vivienne Westwood Bridal Couture and Bob Mackie multi-colour halter-neck gown.
Ariana Grande stuns in 2 couture looks on SNL
Ariana Grande might be taking a break from her music career, but her recent appearance on SNL’s Christmas episode is proof that she is never going to not be iconic. Her acting career took a major leap as she gained rave reviews for her performance in the Wicked franchise. And the singer-turned-actor proved that she can do it all while being humorous during her third stint as host of SNL, aka Saturday Night Live.
However, this isn’t saying she isn’t serving some fashionable looks.
For the promo that announced her as host for SNL, Ariana Grande looked into the archives of the show to serve a look that was totally unexpected. Standing along with Cher, a fashion goddess in her own right, Ariana wore a vintage Bob Mackie look. But it was no ordinary gown.
Styled by Law Roach, this look came with a whole load of context. The celebrity stylist shared on Instagram that the singer wore a vintage Bob Mackie multi-colour silk-crepe chevron-striped halter-neck gown, complete with a matching shawl. This warm-toned gown was a clear nod to television and fashion history and was sourced from Julien’s Auctions. It was originally worn by Carol Burnett during the opening monologue of The Carol Burnett Show in March 17, 1973.
But the connections don’t just stop there. Ariana was standing next to singer Cher, and she has a long-standing professional and creative relationship with Bob Mackie. According to the Red Carpet, “It’s a thoughtful alignment that makes the promo feel rooted in entertainment history rather than simply styled for effect.”
Carol Burnett worked with Mackie throughout her groundbreaking series. In fact, Cher was a frequent guest. Another subtext to the look was that Bob Mackie designed costumes for CBS’s The Judy Garland Show, who portrayed Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. That lineage makes the look especially fitting for Ariana Grande, who is currently playing Glinda in the upcoming Wicked film.
For her opening monologue on SNL, Ariana Grande chose to take a page from her Glinda the Good book and looked ethereal in a stunning blue princess gown.
Ariana Grande returned to host SNL for the final episode that her best friend, cast member Bowen Yang, would be a part of. The show was undoubtedly emotional; Ariana lightened the mood with some dry humour and incredible acting chops.
The gown has been described as the “Vivienne Westwood Pale Blue Silk Taffeta and Tulle Couture Bridal Dress” and was recently sold on a resale site for approximately $27,000. The strapless gown features asymmetric layers and exquisite draping made from a beautiful powder blue fabric. It was part of Vivienne Westwood’s Fall/Winter ’05 Bridal Couture collection. She accessorised the look with Swarovski jewels and the wintery theme was fitting for the season’s Winter Wonderland vibes.
