David Benavidez targets stadium fight against rising star: “That’s one of my dreams”

    -

After a dominant win over Anthony Yarde, David Benavidez is looking to add to his legacy, and he has laid out his intentions to fight at a stadium in the United Kingdom against one of Great Britain’s up-and-coming superstars.

Benavidez made easy work of Yarde, dominating each round before the bout was brought to a close in round seven to mark a first successful defence of the WBC light-heavyweight world title for ‘The Mexican Monster’.

Yet, during the aftermath, Benavidez revealed his plans to move up to the cruiserweight division and take on Gilberto Ramirez for the unified world titles, despite only three fights at 175lbs since moving up from super-middleweight.

Nevertheless, Benavidez has since detailed that he will be willing to drop back down to light-heavyweight in the future and told Carl Froch that a stadium fight against Ben Whittaker could one day be on the cards.

“It’s one of my dreams to fight out there [in the United Kingdom]. The crowd and the energy is amazing. Maybe me and Ben Whittaker. He needs more experience, but hopefully in the future we can make it happen.

He’s a green fighter and needs more experience but hopefully in the future we can make it happen. It’s one of my dreams to fight at Wembley stadium.”

Before Benavidez collides with Ramirez in May, ‘Zurdo’ will first take on Robin Safar on Friday, January 16, as the unified WBA and WBO cruiserweight world champion looks for a more impactful 2026, after just one fight this year.

Meanwhile, Whittaker takes to the ring on Saturday night for his Matchroom debut, as he bids for a statement victory against Germany’s Benjamin Gavazi in Birmingham.
