Mayville won its first WIAA state football title since 1994 with a 42-32 victory over Northwestern in the Division 5 championship game Nov. 20 at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison.
Joe Promersberger and Landen Baker both cleared 120 yards rushing with two touchdowns each as the Cardinals racked up 321 yards on the ground and won the program’s first state title since current coach Scott Hilber’s father, Alex, was at the helm.

Promersberger, the team’s third-leading rusher coming into the game, racked up 134 yards on seven carries, including a 58-yard run. Baker had 120 yards on 29 carries.
The game was tied 14-14 in the second quarter before Promersberger scored on a 36-yard run with 1:07 remaining in the first half. Mayville held the lead the rest of the game.
Tysen Teal had four touchdowns for Northwestern. He rushed for 58 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries and caught five passes for 109 yards and one touchdown.
Promersberger and Owen Steger each had five tackles to lead the Mayville defense.
Steger blocked a punt in the first quarter and Weston Teeters picked up the football for Mayville and ran it back for a 15-yard touchdown for the game’s first points.

Northwestern didn’t even run a snap from scrimmage before taking the lead. Anthony Calore took the ensuing kickoff and went untouched 85 yards to the house, followed by a direct snap to standout lineman Gage Nollet, who plowed in for the conversion.
Mayville finished the season with a 14-0 record while handing Northwestern (13-1) its first loss.
The Cardinals were making their seventh finals appearance and first since 2022. They advanced to the title game and finished runner-up in Division 4 in 1991, 1992 and 2006, and then again in Division 5 in 2021 and 2022.

Northwestern experienced the state finals for the first time in 32 years and for the third time overall. The Tigers won their one state championship in the Division 3 bracket in 1988. The second time they advanced to the title game, they finished runner-up in Division 4.
