Sensex Today: Indian equities closed sharply lower on Tuesday after reports confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, effectively raising the total levy to 50% from August 27.

At the close, the BSE Sensex dropped 849.37 points, or 1.04%, to 80,786.54, while the NSE Nifty 50 slipped 255.7 points, or 1.02%, to 24,712.05.

Broader markets underperformed, with the Nifty MidCap index down 1.62% and the Nifty SmallCap index tumbling 2.03%.

    Nifty outlook:

According to Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research at Kotak Securities, intraday sentiment remains non-directional, making level-based trading ideal. On the upside, 25,000 is a key breakout level, with potential targets of 25,150–25,200. On the downside, support lies at 24,900–24,850, and a breach below 24,850 could drag the index to 24,750–24,700.

    Global Cues

Most Asian benchmarks also traded in the red alongside a stronger dollar. The MSCI Asia Pacific index slipped 0.7 per cent, dragged by Japan’s Nikkei (-1.09 per cent) and South Korea’s Kospi (-0.86 per cent).

Market sentiment soured after US President Donald Trump fired Fed Governor Lisa Cook, alleging falsification of mortgage documents, and threatened export curbs on semiconductors in retaliation against digital services taxes imposed by other nations.

On Wall Street, rate-cut optimism faded, leaving major indices lower on Monday. The S&P 500 fell 0.43 per cent while the Nasdaq slipped 0.22 per cent.
