The series finale of HBO Max’s celebrated period drama ‘The Gilded Age’ tore everyone’s heart topsy-turvy, with Carrie Coon just suggesting she was still uninsured. The show’s Instagram page shared a simply caption that implied, “I’m still recovering from last Sunday,” accompanied by a shot of Coon as the formidable Bertha Russell. Judging from the deluge of comments, it appears the fans tend to agree, with some acknowledging that they have already begun their re-watching process to get over the withdrawal symptoms.

One person summed up the community’s feelings, saying, “I’m so sad that this is the last one for a while. Damn, I love this show so much…in fact I keep re-watching episodes after they air until the next one. What’s a Gilded Age-obsessed woman to do?” Real despair, and honestly? So relatable! Another fan suggested podcasts as companions to fill the void, and maybe that is really the only way till Season 4 lands on our screens.

Coming back to the finale — Lady Bertha and George Russell’s storm brought one clutching their pearls or sometimes even spitting the tea. An ebullient reviewer shared, “The scene between George and Bertha, literally my heart felt crushed.” Then, the whole ‘choo choo daddy’ remark led to an entirely different hilarious stream of people going nuts over the nickname. Someone interjected, “Is screaming for choo choo daddy allowed?” The answer? Absolutely.

Otherwise, international fans too shared their views, including a Turkish fan who praised Coon: “Ms. Carrie, I’ve been watching the first season for the last three days, and I think everyone should agree that you are the one who portrays your character in the show in the smoothest and strongest way, with gestures and tone of voice.” High praise, and frankly? She deserves it.

Now about fashions—Bertha’s costumes have been luscious from day one, and the finale was no exception. One fanatic kept seeing those diamonds: “Mrs. Aster. As Lena walks in neck, bejeweled with diamonds.” Another just screamed, “Carrie is rocking that red!!!!!!”

What really hit hard, though, was how much these characters meant to the fans underneath all that sparkle and glitz. Everything wore them out: from Peggy’s story arc all the way to Gladys’ happiness. One viewer continued, “Oh Bertha has reaped what she has sewn. Glad Gladys is happy and Larry and Marion are talking.”

So, with Season 4 already on everybody’s minds, the only question is: How on earth will we manage to wait for so long? HBO Max better get the behind-the-scenes drops going ASAP if they want to avoid a slight uprising.

Until then, if ever you need us, we’ll be in the corner re-watching the finale for the fifth time, sobbing into our teacups. Justice for Bertha indeed.
