- The University of Florida can now use auxiliary funds for revenue sharing with student-athletes.
- Up to $22.5 million in auxiliary funds, generated from sources like housing and parking, can be used annually.
- This amendment follows the House vs. NCAA settlement, allowing direct payments to athletes.
An amendment passed by the Florida Board of Governors on June 18 opens an avenue for the University of Florida to directly support revenue sharing for Florida Gators sports programs.
The amendment allows for public universities in the state to be able to temporarily use up to $22.5 million in auxiliary funds each year to share money with athletes. Auxiliary funds come from revenues generated by UF in areas such housing, bookstores and parking fees.
The amendment comes on the heels of the landmark House vs. NCAA Settlement. Approved earlier this month, the settlement will allow UF to pay athletes directly and/or fund scholarships from a pool of up to $20.5 million. Payments can begin going to athletes starting July 1. Florida hasn’t announced how it plans to play athletes, though it is expected through the recommended house revenue share model that Florida football and Florida basketball players will be directly compensated.
Based on its membership in the SEC, its success in competition and its history/fan support as the flagship school in the state, Florida has managed to sustain itself an athletic program without direct university support. UF generated $200,094,587 in revenues in fiscal year 2024, per the school’s financial report to the NCAA.
As an athletic department, UF essentially broke even in 2024, with $179,243,138 in total operating expenses, $8.4 million in capital gift contributions utilized for capital projects, unrealized investment gains of $5.3 million and $7.5 million in capital debt expense.
