The program Be Best was created in 2018 and is based on three pillars: well-being, online safety, and opioid awareness. Supporters applaud Melania, but it is seen by her detractors as less significant than the initiatives put forth by other First Ladies in policy implementation.

The negative comments brought Melania’s child welfare message, with her husband’s policies. “Your husband is taking food away from children,” said one detractor, while another asked, “How are you planning to do this Melania, when you care nothing about children?” The harshest remarks reminded everyone about Donald Trump’s legal woes, one vulgar attack stating matter-of-factly, “You must be so proud of your FELON & RAPIST husband.”
The global community commented, too. A Turkish user posted in their native tongue, which means “What do you say about these children?” while linking to an article on refugee crises. This signifies that Melania’s platform extends beyond American borders whether she cares or not.
Some of these were downright strange, with one asking Melania to read their self-published book on government housing programs. Another strangely interrupted the praises for the work with an income scheme pitch. Of course, there were the usual crude references to Melania’s days in modeling and to her character.
This online verbal war gave-loners some insight into one thing: Even years after leaving the White House, Melania Trump remains a polarizing public figure. To her loyalists, she is dignified and compassionate, a champion of children; to detractors, she is blatantly complicit in the controversial policies of her husband’s administration. In between those two extremes is the truth: A former First Lady whose initiatives may have, unfortunately, been overshadowed by political turmoil, yet still have some loyal supporters.

More and more Melania public appearances and pronouncements will continue to stir such mixtures of adoration and animosity as the lead-up to the 2024 election crosses into high gear. Whether she is seen as the champion of children or a puppet for a political movement steeped in controversy, what is undeniable is her ability to draw attention. This appearance at the Senate Spouses Luncheon is a definite reminder that the Trumps still fill the pages of the national conversation, whether for better or worse, no less. Melania Trump remains a polarizing public figure.
