English Language Day is observed on April 23 every year. Initiated by the United Nations, the day is recognised worldwide to honour the beauty and evolution of the English language. The day commemorates the birth and death anniversary of William Shakespeare, whose contribution to English literature greatly enriched the language.
English is the most Spoken language in the world- serving as a bridge for international communication among people from different countries. Even for those whose mother tongue is not English, it has become an essential part of their daily life- from education and business to media and travel.
The United Nations celebrates the day to admire the elegance of the English language and promote multilingualism and cultured diversity. The day aims to celebrate the language which unites culture, initiates global trades and encourages educational excellence.
English Language Day: History
English Language Day was established in 2010 by the United Nations Department of Public Information. UN also has six official languages – Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish and there is a designated day for each to promote to celebrate Multilingualism and cultural diversity.
To celebrate this day, April 23 was chosen as it coincides with both the birth and death anniversary of William Shakespeare, who is known as one of the greatest poets and playwrights of all time.
English Language Day 2025: Significance
English holds a special value in global communication. It is the most popular worldwide spoken language and serves as the common medium of communication in global affairs, diplomatic relations, education, business, science and whatnot.
